Tehran had so far denied that its weapons had been used in its invasion of Ukraine.
Iran today admitted for the first time that it supplied drones to Russia before its invasion of Ukraine in late February, confirming Kiev’s allegations against Moscow over using weapons of that origin to attack civilians and infrastructure. “We delivered a limited number of months before the war,” Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdolahian announced.
In recent weeks, Kiev and its Western allies had accused Russia of using Tehran-made drones to launch attacks in Ukraine. The Ayatollah regime has repeatedly denied that these weapons were produced in Iran. In any case, the head of Persian diplomacy agreed to examine any evidence that they had been used in the conflict.
The government of Volodímir Zelensky has confirmed that some 400 Iranian drones have been used against the civilian population so far and that Moscow has ordered some 2,000. “Tehran must bear in mind that the consequences of complicity in the Russian crimes against Ukraine will far outweigh the benefits,” Nikolenko, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, said on Facebook, in response to the Iranian statements.
Tehran’s recognition of these drone deliveries shows a little more the rapprochement between Russia and Iran that has begun in recent months, in light of a Ukraine widely supported by the United States and the European Union (EU).
