The world climate summit, COP27, starts in Egypt, November 6, 2022

About 200 countries will meet from this Sunday to November 18 at the 27th edition of the climate summit, in a context that is “complicated” this year and with new challenges to face.

Representatives of governments, institutions, the private sector and civil society from around the world 200 countries they will meet from this Sunday 6 November until the following day 18 in Egypt in a difficult international diplomatic context with the challenge of restoring confidence to form a common front to fight the global challenge of climate change.

The city of Sharm-El Sheik (Egypt) organizes these two weeks the XXVII Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27)the XVII session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (COP-MOP17) and the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA4)as well as the sessions of 57 subsidiary bodies and an extensive agenda of parallel events organized by institutions, governments, multilateral organisations, companies, NGOs and civil society with a growing participation of young people and children.

Starting today, on 7 and 8 November, world leaders, heads of state and government, including the Spanish President Pedro Sanchezwill kick off with a high-level event to kick off two weeks of negotiations, which this year will focus on making progress on mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage among other topics.

In addition, during the first two days, several countries will present thematic initiatives on specific themes, such as the initiative that Spain and Senegal will jointly defend in the fight against desertification. This model of proposals gained momentum at the previous climate summit, COP26, which was held in Glasgow (UK) to promote the implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures in different sectors.

The motto of COP27, ‘Together for implementation’seeks to unite international action in a context where the Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has admitted that this will be the summit of “trust” as it will be “complicated” by the difficulty of “a very good part of the world to maintain confidence” in climate change solutions.

The COP26 held last November ended with the Glasgow Climate Pactwhich aims to promote measures against global warming in a multilateral manner and target all sectors to ensure that global warming does not exceed its increase by the end of the century. 1.5ºCresponding to the urgent adaptation needs of the most vulnerable communities and channeling financing for adaptation in developing countries.

The appointment fits in an international context characterized by the end of the pandemic and with Russian invasion of Ukraine that has sparked a global energy and food crisis that could affect climate negotiations.
