UK intelligence confirms Kremlin is succumbing to criticism from Wagner and Kadyrov group

The commander of Russia’s Central Military District, Colonel General Alexander Lapin, has been replaced by Major General Alexander Linkov, the British Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

“If confirmed, it will follow a series of layoffs of senior Russian military commanders since the invasion began in February 2022,” the ministry wrote. The commanders of the East, South and West military districts have already been replaced.

Yevgenii Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner Group, and Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov have criticized and accused Lapin of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Lyman, a key logistics hub in the liberated Donetsk region, on Oct. 1.

“These dismissals represent a pattern of blaming senior Russian military commanders for failing to achieve Russian objectives on the battlefield,” the ministry said.

The new commander, Linkov, was previously head of the Organization and Mobilization Department of the Russian Central Military District.
