Night shelling – air raids on Mariupol: “This is not life”

Date:

The Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which has been fighting for weeks, was again the target of Russian airstrikes on Wednesday evening, according to sources in Kiev. According to the Ukrainian army, Russian troops also attacked the city’s port and the Azovstal steel plant. Ukrainian soldiers have entrenched themselves in the sprawling industrial complex. The other citizens also suffer greatly.

In Mariupol, despite the destruction of many houses, civilians are holding out, as Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov told the ARD “Tagesthemen” on Tuesday. People stayed in cellars and shelters to avoid the shelling. “This is not life. That is survival,” Orlov said. The Ukrainian government of the Donetsk region, to which Mariupol belongs, said on Tuesday that more than 20,000 people were estimated to have died there.

In other areas, however, the shelling continued. The city of Kharkov in the east of the country reported that it had again become the target of Russian attacks. The details of the fighting are not independently verifiable, but Ukraine’s morning report indicates that the military situation has not changed much. A large-scale Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine is expected in the coming days or weeks.
