Even locks in Tyrol – network paralyzed: problems with highway tunnels

Date:

Drivers beware: a network failure has caused problems with tunnel control and traffic control systems on all Austrian highways and expressways since Monday morning. In Tyrol even three tunnels had to be closed.

According to Asfinag, the blocked “tubes” in Tyrol are the Arlberg, Roppener and Perjen tunnels. “However, all other systems can remain in operation,” it said. As a precaution, the highway manager also manned long tunnels such as the Plabutsch tunnel in Graz with personnel at the portals.

“Safety not at risk”
Road safety is not affected by this! All safety facilities in the tunnel, such as the ventilation, would work 100 percent independently and start automatically in the event of an incident.

Search for cause in progress
It was explained as a network outage in the Asfinag area and a control issue. The cause is still unknown. With the exception of the three Tyrolean tunnels mentioned, all the others – there are more than 160 in all of Austria – are in use.

Miles of traffic jams formed in both directions in front of the closed tunnels, the ÖAMTC reported. According to the club, an accident also happened in Upper Austria on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) towards St. Michael when the Klaus tunnel chain was closed.
