Despite the war, Ukraine wants to start building four new nuclear reactors this summer or fall. American technology will be used, but also Russian know-how.
Currently, three nuclear power plants in Ukrainian-controlled areas cover more than 55 percent of electricity needs. The government in Kiev wants to expand the sector to compensate for the loss of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe was captured by Russian troops.
Now the lost capacity must be compensated with four new reactor blocks in Khmelnytskyj, in the west of the country. Energy Minister German Galuschchenko announced this on Thursday.
Two of the planned reactors would be based on Russian technology imported from Bulgaria. The other two use Western technology from US nuclear power plant manufacturer Westinghouse, the report said.
Zaporizhia nuclear power plant: safety concerns
The Ukrainian Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The Russian military took control of the facility in March 2022. Since then, the nuclear power plant has been attacked several times and has also been disconnected from the power supply several times. The International Atomic Energy Agency recently warned that Russia’s nuclear power plant management is unlikely to carry out extensive maintenance on the plant this year.
A work plan was presented to the IAEA permanent observers on the ground last week, but from the Atomic Energy Agency’s point of view it has shortcomings. “This maintenance must be carried out to guarantee nuclear safety,” Grossi demanded.
