The dramatic images of a sinking superyacht (see video) off the coast of the city of Catanzaro went around the world: the 40-meter ship turned sideways before the stern disappeared into the water. Four passengers and five crew members, all Italians, were rescued. The yacht is said to belong to a Russian oligarch.
My Saga is owned by Russian oligarch Gennady Ayvazyan. With his Kru Trade company, the 54-year-old is the largest coal trader in the world. His fortune is estimated at $500 million.
This caught the attention of the authorities. Initial investigation shows that the 50 million euro yacht originally came from Greece. She flew the flag of the Cayman Islands and was on her way from Gallipoli to Milazzo. The location of the accident is particularly striking: organized crime is said to be deeply rooted in the area off the coast of Calabria.
Investigators suspect that the ship was deliberately sunk. Investigators are still unsure about the motive.
