Would like to be paralyzed – perfectly healthy woman is in a wheelchair voluntarily

Date:

To some it may sound absurd: perfectly healthy people who feel the desire to have a physical disability. But what sounds like a macabre joke is the description of a rare disease and an awkward wish for patients like Jørund Viktoria Alme from Oslo or Karsten S. from Frankfurt.

Jørund Viktoria Alme is 53 years old and senior credit analyst based in Oslo. She has no physical disability, but identifies as a disabled woman. For Alme — who was originally born in a man’s body — it was a lifelong dream to be born a woman paralyzed from the waist down, according to The Harald. These “thoughts and reactions” developed from the age of five, triggered by certain situations, such as when a classmate came to school with a splint on his leg and crutches.

Has been living in a wheelchair for 5 years now
“My response was of intense interest,” Alme said. “My heart was pounding, my heart rate went up and I was activated in my body. I was incredibly focused on him and what it was about…” said the Norwegian. Alme has been using a wheelchair for five years now. By her side: her partner Agnes and their two sons. “We went through this process together. Agnes was fantastic,” said Alme.

The Norwegian had a big “aha moment” when she was finally able to sit in her wheelchair: “If my legs are allowed to rest completely, the triggering of the BIID is stopped, so I get a lot of rest and can use my resources for other things. But What exactly is BIID?BIID is the short form of the rare disease “Body Integrity Identity Disorder”. In the psychological phenomenon, those affected feel the desire to acquire a physical disability, such as blindness, spinal cord injury or amputation of a body part.

Those affected who, like Alme, voluntarily sit in a wheelchair, are also called “pretenders”. They pretend to be handicapped by tying a leg, walking on crutches or getting into a wheelchair.

Karsten S. is also voluntarily in a wheelchair
In this case, a young man from Frankfurt am Main is in a similar situation to the 53-year-old Norwegian. Karsten S. (30) is – according to Der Spiegel – a hobby football player and in excellent health. His dearest wish: he would like to have a spinal cord injury. He too is in a wheelchair voluntarily and he too sees it as part of his identity to be an amputee or a spinal cord injury.

When asked if he would have his spinal cord cut if he found a surgeon, Karsten replies, “Yes, absolutely yes.” For him, however, the condition is that side effects such as impotence and incontinence are excluded. As a child, Karsten was already fascinated by the disabled. As he got older, curiosity became an obsession: “I find it erotic how people in wheelchairs with spinal cord injury move gracefully in a certain way.”

Information exchanged with data subjects on the internet
At first he didn’t know how Karsten should deal with that. It wasn’t until the 30-year-old came across forums on the internet where pretenders from Germany and around the world exchanged ideas that he knew he wasn’t alone with his obsession. “When I noticed that there were several more, I knew for sure: this is what I want,” said the German. At the age of 20, he finally used a wheelchair for the first time – and felt at home.

Magazine received letters from readers with similar fantasies
Psychologists in the US were aware of the BIID phenomenon as early as the 1970s, when the men’s magazine “Penthouse” printed letters from readers reporting their amputation fantasies.

YouTuber Izzy Kornblau, who herself has a chronic disability and is very open about it on her channel, has posted a long video about people with BIID. She says she was skeptical and resentful when she first researched body integrity identity disorder. When she learned more about people with BIID, she understood better. People who suffer from BIID suffer from it and do not want to be disabled for fun, reports wmn magazine.
