A California player won the US Powerball lottery jackpot on Tuesday with a record $2.04 billion. This was announced by the California Lottery lottery company. He must now decide whether to receive the full amount in installments over three decades or a one-time upfront payment of approximately $1.4 billion.
The jackpot had grown into the world’s largest top prize in lottery history since there was last a winner in early August. Since then, in 40 draws, not a single participant has managed to get six correct numbers.
In January 2016, three Powerball players shared the world’s largest jackpot in history, worth $1.586 billion. The second highest jackpot – and the highest won by a single player – was worth $1,537 billion and was struck in the Mega Millions lottery in October 2018.
Jackpot chance one in 292 million
Powerball raffle tickets cost two dollars and are sold in almost every US state. The odds of winning the jackpot are about one in 292 million. By comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in the United States is about one in a million.
