The Russian army announced today that it is withdrawing from the annexed Ukrainian city Khersonthe only regional capital in the entire country under Russian control, which could be a turning point in the Russian invasion and Ukraine’s liberation of Moscow-occupied territories.
“We propose to move the defense to the left bank of the Dnieper River,” announced the head of the armed forces in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, and informed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who approved that withdrawal.
The Russian-imposed authorities in Kherson ordered evacuation in the region of about 80,000 civilians from the right bank to the left bank of the Dnieper River in light of the approach of Ukrainian troops.
Two weeks ago, they also included the provincial capital in their mandatory evacuation plans.
They later extended the measure to the left bank of the Dnieper to remove up to 70,000 people there.
Coincidentally, the pro-Russian deputy governor of Ukraine’s Kherson region, Kiril Stremousovdied today as a result of a car accident, reports the leader of the organization “Crimean volunteers”, Valeria Petrusevich.
Hours earlier, official Ukrainian sources did not rule out that “simulated withdrawal” of the Kherson Russians to ambush the Ukrainian troops. The Ukrainian army has assured that it has intensified its offensive in the eastern regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.
For his part, the Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskovymade a surprise visit to the Lugansk region, as confirmed on Wednesday by Sergei Kiriyenko, a senior official in the Russian presidency.
In addition, Russia is strengthening its defense lines in the occupied territories to prevent a rapid advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU), especially in Mariupolcoastal city of the Sea of Azov.
