Ana Baneira was arrested during the protests over the death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini
A 24-year-old Spanish woman, Ana Baneira, has been arrested by Iranian police, as reported on Wednesday by the Human Rights Activists news agency (HRANA) and confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both the place of arrest and the day of the events are unknown.
Baneira is the second Spanish national to be detained in the Asian country, which has been embroiled for weeks in a battle between the ayatollahs’ government and thousands of youths who have taken to the streets to demand more freedom. The spark that sparked the biggest social uprising since the coming to power of the religious leaders led by Khomeini was the death of the young Kurdish Masha Amini after he was arrested by the moral police for improperly wearing the veil.
Santiago Sánchez was arrested right after visiting the young woman’s grave in the city of Saquez, in Iranian Kurdistan. This 41-year-old from Madrid had started his journey, walking, from his hometown with the aim of reaching Qatar to enjoy the World Cup. After crossing Turkey and traveling through Iraq, he arrived in Iran. There, almost a month ago, his track was lost. The embassy in Tehran is monitoring the two cases and is gathering more information.
