Withdrawal from Kherson – Zelenskyj warns: ‘Enemy does not give gifts’

Date:

Despite Moscow’s announced withdrawal from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and from the entire right bank of the Dnipro (video above), Ukraine’s president is urging restraint. After this announcement, there was “a lot of joy,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily video speech on Wednesday evening. “But our emotions must be kept in check – especially during the war.” He considers it unlikely that the Russian army will really leave the city without a fight.

Zelenskyy pointed out that the withdrawal of the Russian occupiers was mainly due to the successes of the Ukrainian armed forces. “The enemy gives us no gifts, makes no gestures of goodwill.”

“Everyone will see our results”
And Ukraine will continue to fight. “I will certainly not tell the enemy all the details of our operations,” Zelenskyy said. “Whether it’s in the south, in the east or wherever — everyone will, of course, see our results.” The Ukrainian army will continue “very carefully, without emotion, without undue risk”. And this with as little loss as possible. “In this way we will ensure the liberation of Kherson, Kakhovka, Donetsk and our other cities.”

Zelenskyy warned decision makers in Moscow against ordering to blow up the Kakhovka dam over Kherson or damage the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. “This would mean they would declare war on the whole world,” the president said.

Moscow speaks of “regrouping”
Pressured by constant Ukrainian attacks, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday ordered the withdrawal of the Russian army from Kherson and the entire region around the city. After the failure of the advance to Kiev and the retreat at Kharkov, this is considered another military defeat for Russia. Moscow called the withdrawal a “military necessity” and “regrouping of forces”.

Meanwhile, both Russia and Ukraine took many casualties in the war, according to US military estimates. “You are dealing with more than 100,000 killed and wounded Russian soldiers,” US Army General Mark Milley said Wednesday (local time). The same is true “probably on the Ukrainian side”. The numbers are the most accurate the US has released to date. However, they could not be independently verified.

General promotes negotiations
Milley also promoted talks to end the war. It is possible that neither Ukraine nor Russia can win militarily, the US general said. It is therefore necessary to look for “other means”.
