Iran says it has successfully completed development of a hypersonic ballistic missile. “This missile will target the enemy’s advanced missile defense systems and represents a major generational leap in this area,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency, commander of the Revolutionary Guards Air Force, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said on Thursday.
So far, there have been no reports of hypersonic missile tests from Iran. Concerns over Iran’s missile program were one of the reasons behind the US withdrawal of then-President Donald Trump from the international nuclear deal in 2018.
Can reach a speed of 6200 kilometers per hour
Hypersonic missiles are difficult to intercept by defense systems because of their high speed and complex trajectory. The speed can be at least five times the speed of sound, so about 6200 kilometers per hour. Russia has already used hypersonic missiles in the war in Ukraine. According to insiders, the United States successfully tested a hypersonic missile in July. North Korea is also said to be working on such missiles.
