Reforms are needed – Abbas appoints a new Palestinian prime minister

Date:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appoints Mohammed Mustafa as the new prime minister. The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported this on Thursday. He succeeds Mohammed Shtayyeh, who resigned as prime minister at the end of February.

The Palestinian government is based in the West Bank. Until the Gaza War, the Gaza Strip was controlled by the radical Islamic group Hamas. The government is under international pressure to implement reforms.

Mohammed Shtayyeh belonged to Fatah, the faction with the most influence in the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Hamas is not a member of the PA and is a rival of Fatah.

The Israeli government does not want Hamas or a Fatah-led PA as a government in the coastal strip in the future.
