The Volkswagen group plans to divert between 40,000 and 50,000 electric SUVs planned in Landaben (Navarra) so that they can eventually be produced by Martorell (Catalonia), according to claims The Automotive Tribune.

According to this communication medium, as part of the Future: Fast Forward project, Martorell will only produce Cupra and Volkswagen urban ‘zero emissions’ vehicles, which represents an adjustment of the future production program of the Catalan center of between 80,000 and 90,000 units per year from 2028.

To compensate for this situation, the multinational would have decided to transfer between 40,000 and 50,000 units annually from Landaben to Martorell, although this transfer would only affect the “additional” production that the Navarra plant could carry out by all the flexibility to activate mechanisms within its reach and with weekend shifts, so that it would not affect the permanent workforce.

From the company they noted they won’t comment on it “speculations” from media.

The Government of Navarre will meet with the works council member of Volkswagen Navarra in a “threatening” way to address the possible lack of production from 2026 that could reduce the workforce at the Landaben plant.

As reported on Wednesday by Foral Executive spokesman Elma Saiz at a press conference, the committee has requested the meeting and it will take place “soon”.

Last Friday, the works council of Volkswagen Navarra demanded that production volumes be maintained from 2026 to ensure that there is no large surplus of staff. It has encrypted production at 350,000-400,000 cars per year, so that from that year on there will be no more staff surplus.
