Balance of the food guidance of the state of Upper Austria: six companies had to be closed in 2024 due to extreme defects, including three bakeries and a butcher. For ambitious control bodies, the activity also contains dangers for life and life.
“Our work is exciting, but not harmless,” says Astrid Zeller, head of the supermarket supervision of the Austria. It recalls that two control bodies in neighboring Germany were seriously injured in a knife attack. “We know that our missions are not always easy for the controllers – but try to perform the controls with sensitivity.”
7000 control
In 2024, 7001 checks were carried out at 6210 operations, 35 food supervisory bodies were used. “The goal is to protect the health of the consumer and to protect them from fraud.” Food companies and large kitchens in hospitals, nursery schools and pension homes, for example, are controlled considerably more often than hairdressers.
If defects are found, the company must remove the complaints. “In severe cases, there are also advertisements from the criminal authorities plus paid follow -checks,” Zeller explains.
Mice in production activities
Due to the danger in delay, six companies had to be closed forever in the previous year-three bakeries, two gastro-farms and a butcher. “In one case, mice were seen, open in another linseed and sunflower seeds in one stable.”
The hygiene defects were also devastating at the third bakery and there was not even a commercial report. “So we officially knew nothing about their existence.” In general, however, Zeller is not dissatisfied: “88 percent of rehearsals were unobtrusive.”
