Terrifying scenes took place on Thursday afternoon at the Burgenland state police headquarters in Eisenstadt. A 37-year-old detainee allegedly set fire to his cell. Four police officers were slightly injured.
The officers, like the prisoner, were taken to a hospital on suspicion of smoke inhalation, a police spokesperson said. Some officials quickly extinguished the fire, but there was a lot of smoke.
Cell made of non-combustible materials
According to the police, the Moroccan, who is about to be deported, had revolted earlier in the cell. How he managed to set the cell on fire was initially unclear. Because the special detention cell is made of flame-retardant materials, it did not burn badly, but produced a lot of smoke, said Philipp Dorner, spokesman for the Eisenstadt fire brigade. The comrades wore respiratory protection and ventilated the smoky rooms of the state police headquarters. The operation lasted almost an hour.
