The ring blackout caused amazement and excitement this week. But just 300 meters away is Austria’s largest prison, right in the heart of Vienna, in Josefstadt. And there are currently 1,707 people in four prisons in Vienna – from petty thieves to mafia accomplices.
Do the cells open for protection?
What happens in the event of a longer power outage? Do the doors – as we know them from movies – open automatically? Are the Brothers and Sisters of the Port of Vienna Praying for a Power Outage?
Hollywood Style Breakthrough
That danger does not exist, assures the responsible Ministry of Justice. “Purely mechanical operation of the locking systems is possible. For security reasons, we cannot provide detailed information.”
However, a blackout plays an important role in safety considerations. A spokeswoman: “The aim is to maintain key functions such as securing the detainees and their basic needs. The facilities have food supplies and operate with emergency generators. Emergency drills are already taking place.”
So not a glimmer of hope in the looming darkness for the Viennese prisoners.
