Attentive witnesses alerted emergency services after they observed on Thursday how a man in a forest in Vienna-Liesing removed native birds in several small cages and then left waste in the form of wires and cords.
When officers arrived, they discovered a 58-year-old man sitting in a camp chair in the bushes. He held a cord in his hand that led to a branch about 80 centimeters long that sat in the ground. On this branch sat a still alive but already injured bird, which was also tied to the leg with a string.
Attracted with birdseed
Police say the bird was attracted to a box of birdseed. Right next door, the officers saw longer wooden skewers with strong glue (bird glue) on the branches of the bush. In which the 58-year-old had already attached two dead birds.
Birds no longer peck at glue
The birds got stuck when they perched on one of the glued branches. The resulting move informed the 55-year-old about the capture.
Nine more cages with birds discovered
The officials were able to secure two more cages, each containing a bird (goldfinch). In the man’s apartment, the officers found seven more cages with birds. The animals were initially taken care of by animal shelters and the nature service and then taken to the animal shelters.
The suspect told the officers that he always fed the animals well at home.
