The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the approval of Biontech/Pfizer’s Corona vaccine, which is adapted to Omicron variants BA.4/BA.5, for children over the age of five. The EMA announced this on Friday in Amsterdam.
The vaccine, modified for the omicron subvariants, was previously approved as a booster for people 12 years and older. The EU commission has yet to approve the recommendation, but it is seen as a formality.
The experts expect broader protection against various corona variants. The manufacturers pointed to studies showing strong immune responses against BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants in people over 18 years of age 30 days after vaccination. The modified vaccine is just as well tolerated and safe as the original preparation.
Green light for Sanofi vaccine
On Thursday, the EMA gave the green light to approve a corona booster vaccine from the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi. According to the EMA, this has been shown in studies to be effective against the ommicron variants of the virus.
