No authorization? Trump Sues Subpoena for Attack on Capitol

Date:

Former US President Donald is taking legal action against his subpoena by the Commission of Inquiry into the attack on the Capitol. Trump’s lawyers filed suit Friday in a Florida court challenging the panel’s subpoena. The committee had asked Trump to be available for a multi-day interrogation under oath starting next Monday. This move was a new kind of escalation to an ex-president.

After the subpoena, Trump initially left it open how he would respond. Now he responded with a lawsuit shortly before the scheduled witness date. Trump’s lawyers argued, among other things, that the committee had no authority to compel the Republican to testify. In addition, the summons violates, among other things, the executive privilege of the former president. This is a president’s prerogative to keep certain information secret.

Five people were killed in the riots
On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters violently stormed the seat of parliament in the capital Washington. Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Earlier, Trump had told his supporters in a speech that he had been robbed of a victory by massive electoral fraud. Five people were killed in the riots.

The committee in the House of Representatives is working on the attack. During several public hearings, Trump was heavily accused by witnesses. Accordingly, Trump knew the protesters were armed the day of the attack on the Capitol and deliberately directed them to the seat of Congress. Former confidants also said Trump was actively trying to reverse the election results, despite senior figures close to him openly denying allegations of voter fraud.

Trump hands over phone records from the day of the Capitol storm
In addition to the call to testify, the Commission of Inquiry also asked Trump to hand over a large number of documents. On the day of the attack, Trump would have to hand over data from all phone calls, text messages and communications via the Signal chat service. He must also disclose with whom he has communicated in the days about the results of the presidential election. The committee had originally set a deadline of November 4, but then extended it by a few days.

Trump had repeatedly attacked the body in the past and described the allegations as lies. The committee struggled from the start: The Republicans torpedoed a bipartisan inquiry into the attack on the Capitol, and eventually so did the committee more or less from the start. After public disputes, there are seven Democrats on the committee — and only two Republicans, both of whom are proven Trump critics and will no longer belong to the next House of Representatives.

Last Tuesday, the Chamber of Congress was fully re-elected. It is not yet clear who will govern the House of Representatives in the future. It currently looks more like that the Republicans will take the lead there from January. The body is currently in the final stage of its work.

Trump’s new presidential bid is expected
Trump is expected to announce a new presidential bid for the 2024 election next Tuesday. Trump promised a “very big announcement” that night and has issued specific instructions to that effect with increasing vehemence in recent weeks and months.
