At least 19 migrants from southern Africa have died trying to cross the Mediterranean from Tunisia in a boat to Italy, according to a human rights organization.
Five people have been rescued by the Tunisian coastguard, Ramadan Ben Omar of the Forum for Social and Economic Rights (FTDES) told Reuters. Tunisian authorities could not be reached for comment.
About 80 boats have been prevented from crossing into Italy in the past four days alone, according to the Tunisian coastguard, and more than 3,000 migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan African countries, have been arrested.
