The practice has already escalated in Schladming (Styria): A 16-year-old in a Krampus costume was reported for assault after allegedly injuring a tourist on his way home.
A 23-year-old probably imagined her vacation differently: on November 5, she was surprised by a Krampus in Schladming shortly before midnight! The costumed figure held the foreign tourist and beat her “black and blue” with a stick. The police were then notified.
Now there is an investigation into a suspect: a 16-year-old youth. “He is charged with assault,” police spokeswoman Jessica Schartner said. The search is still ongoing for another suspect who may have been involved in the crime.
“It’s Way Too Early For Krampuses”
“That has nothing to do with customs,” clarifies Mayor Hermann Trinker, “it’s much too early.” The fact that the Krampus tradition has already caused a stir in the entire Liezen district this year is also confirmed by the Liezen police. Walter Abel: “As early as November 1, ten Krampuses were talking to each other via Snapchat.”
There were many complaints about noise pollution, but also about fear. The city has now organized appointments at safe places for the goings-on.
