Only about every ninth participant in the medical entrance test is admitted to the course – and this despite the fact that there is a shortage of doctors in Austria. Facilitating admission to university could be a solution. However, about a third of all graduates migrate to other professions or abroad. Why is that.
A mandatory nursing internship instead of the theory exam – the suggestion of the primary Reinhold Kerbl recently led to a debate about the entrance test of medicine (MedAT). At the end of the one-year nursing internship, a panel would decide on admission to medical school.
Michaela E., doctor at the Floridsdorf clinic, can also imagine that. During her first year she also worked in nursing and had good experiences. “One has to learn how to deal with a body. I think it should be expected of nursing and medical students,” says the doctor. But not everyone is happy about it.
