“Grüß Gott” or “Hello”? A discussion has erupted in Austrian politics about the “correct” greeting. This is how the Styrian politicians think.
Unnecessarily – and you can also see this in the Styrian SPÖ – the Social Democrats have once again started a debate that they find it difficult to get out of. In the ÖVP U-committee, SPÖ party leader Kai Jan Krainer even went so far as to say that in Vienna they don’t say “Grüß Gott” but “Hello”. That stuck – and is now causing a heated discussion about Austrian greetings. And what do Styrian government members think of the greeting? Well, we’ve asked you the crucial question – you can read the answers here:
“Learned from an early age”
“Of course I say ‘Grüß Gott'”, emphasizes ÖVP governor Christopher Drexler: “That’s how I learned it from an early age and that’s how I will keep it. I really travel a lot through Styria and have not met anyone who suffers from that. would have had. And of course, if someone else greets me, that’s fine with me.”
“Everyone must greet as he pleases”
Anton Lang blows the same horn: “This debate really shouldn’t be a debate, because in my opinion it is pointless and we clearly have other concerns and challenges to resolve,” says the Red head of state and deputy governor. It’s up to you how you greet. “I have always said ‘Grüß Gott’ and will continue to do so in the future.”
