Chaos, destruction and increasing deaths: Unusually heavy rains and severe flooding have killed at least 253 people in South Africa’s coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal. Provincial Health Minister Nomagugu Simelane said on Wednesday. The numbers could still rise, because many people are still missing.
The army was also mobilized to provide emergency assistance. President Cyril Ramaphosa (pictured below) visited the flooded areas. The rescue work was difficult as many roads had been washed away. The situation was also exacerbated by the failure of hundreds of cell towers due to landslides and dilapidated infrastructure.
In the region around the city of Durban, houses, the harbor and highways were damaged. In the harbor, sea containers were swept up by the bodies of water and piled up (photo below and video above).
The country’s authorities are providing emergency shelters for hundreds of people whose homes and apartments have been destroyed or made uninhabitable by the flooding disaster.
The coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal on the Indian Ocean is one of South Africa’s most important holiday destinations and had actually already prepared for the traditional Easter crowds of domestic and foreign tourists.
