Rats “dance” to Mozart’s sonata

A Japanese study proves that rodents have tact – a commonality with humans.

“You filthy rat”, “The rats leave the sinking ship” or “The rat’s tail of trouble” – these expressions show that the little rodents do not have a good reputation.

Rats can’t resist rhythm
A Japanese study is now putting an end to the negative image of the animals. Because rats and humans have one thing in common. They can’t resist a rhythm and instinctively move along to the music. This ability was previously thought to be unique to us bipeds. “The rats showed innate — that is, without any training or prior exposure to music — clock synchronization,” said Hirokazu Takahashi, a scientist at Japan’s University of Tokyo.

For the study, the researchers played Mozart’s Sonata for two pianos in D major for ten animals. Sensors could register a rhythmic head movement. The team now plans to study how other musical properties, such as melody and harmony, are related to brain dynamics.

By the way, the rodents are considered very clean and live in family groups. The prejudices disgusting and mean are not correct in nature.
