Infections decrease – monkeypox vaccine: 7000 doses coming in December

Date:

“In December, 7,320 doses of vaccine against monkeypox are expected in Austria,” the health ministry announced on Sunday. All people from risk groups who are interested in vaccination can be vaccinated with the new doses. However, the number of new infections worldwide has fallen sharply since August. According to the ministry, such a development can also be observed in Austria. 325 cases have been reported so far.

There have been fewer than five cases per week for the past six weeks. No new cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the past week (as of November 11). Most infections so far have been mild to moderate, but sometimes with severe pain.

Four deaths have been recorded so far in the EU, six people requiring intensive care. So far there have been no deaths in Austria. Children and adolescents were not affected in Austria.

Medications are also available
Since only one fifth of the normal dose needs to be used for preventive vaccinations, up to 18,000 people can be vaccinated twice with the 7,000 doses. Austria has also received the monkeypox drug Tecovirimat. It is used for the emergency treatment of particularly serious illnesses

“As a small country, it was right to rely on joint European tenders. That has now been confirmed,” said Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens). The Ministry of Health signed the corresponding contracts with the European health authority HERA this week. The vaccine against the monkeypox virus on the world market is still scarce. The joint procurement of the EU has now secured some 171,000 cans from the single manufacturer, according to the ministry, ensuring that all member states – depending on the epidemiological situation – have fair access to vaccines.
