Microsleep – car slips in stream, father saves his sons

Date:

This could have ended very badly. Because he had dozed off for a while, a man in Upper Austria drove his car off the road and skidded into a stream. His two sons – aged two and four – were also in the car.

Schalchen, 37, drove his car in his hometown on Holzleitnerstrasse in the direction of Herrgasse at around 3:10 p.m. on Saturday. His two sons were in the vehicle – just two and four years old.

Against tree and in the creek
According to his own statements, the 37-year-old left the roadway due to microsleep and broke through the railing between the roadway and the Brunnbach. The car then collided head-on with a tree on the other side of the stream and came to rest in the stream.

First aiders arrive quickly
The father of the family was able to get out of the vehicle under his own power and immediately freed his two sons before a first responder, hearing the impact of the vehicle and rushing to the scene of the accident, helped him exit the creek bed.

Dad didn’t want to go to the hospital
Fortunately, all three occupants were not injured in the accident; The 37-year-old refused a check-up at the hospital as a precaution. Since the fluid from the vehicle’s operating assets was leaking into the Brunnbach, the fire service installed an oil barrier and secured the operating assets.
