A tragic plane crash occurred in the Pustertal Valley in South Tyrol on Tuesday. A glider pilot started in Nikolsdorf in East Tyrol and never came back. A 51-year-old flight instructor and his student (17) were killed in the crash.
Because the glider pilot did not return to Nikolsdorf according to plan and there was no longer radio contact with the 51-year-old German trainer and his 17-year-old student pilot, emergency services in South Tyrol were informed on Tuesday.
Cause of crash still unclear
On Wednesday morning, a helicopter discovered the glider on a mountain – at an altitude of 1800 meters – above Monguelfo in the Pustertal. The glider may have crashed on the return flight to East Tyrol. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, authorities said. The glider has been seized and is now under investigation. All help came too late for the flight instructor and his student.
On a sailing holiday in East Tyrol
The two Germans were on holiday in East Tyrol during the Easter holidays. “At the moment we have many German guests. However, the crashed plane is not ours,” confirms the Nikolsdorf airport.
