Curious data from Germany – the filling level of the gas storage jumped more than 100 percent

Date:

The preparations for the winter are going well if we are to believe the latest reports from the gas storage association GIE. The value of hoarded natural gas is more than 90 percent everywhere. In Germany, the filling level even exceeded 100 percent. A value that is extremely surprising at first glance.

According to the information, there were 245.44 terawatt hours of natural gas stored in Germany on Monday morning. This was slightly above the 100 percent mark of 245.39 terawatt hours, which indicates the so-called working gas volume. This reflects the guaranteed capacity, explains the President of the Federal Network Office, Klaus Müller. The physical capabilities of the storage facilities are partly higher, which would allow some to store more gas. “Therefore, more than 100 percent can be saved,” it said.

When it comes to percentages, the GIE transparency platform AGSI only takes into account the filling level in relation to the working gas volume. The reported value thus reaches a maximum of 100 percent. At the EU level, the reservoirs were also well filled on Monday morning: the AGSI side recorded a filling level of 95.6 percent.

The storage facilities absorb fluctuations in gas consumption and thus form a buffer system for the market. According to current forecasts, capacity should still be around 40 percent on February 1.

Next success message
On Tuesday there was another success story: the first jetty for liquefied natural gas in Germany was completed in record time. This is now open in Wilhelmshaven. Niedersachsen Ports, a company owned by the German state of Lower Saxony, has converted an existing port into a permanent floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). From December deliveries of liquefied natural gas can be received and delivered to the German grid.

USA largest supplier to date
So far, Germany and other European countries have received LNG received via the Netherlands, Belgium or France mainly from the US. Qatar is also one of the largest exporters. Economy Minister Robert Habeck tried to find supply links during a trip in the spring. Qatar would like long-term contracts and already sells a lot of gas to Asia. Other major LNG exporting countries are Australia, Malaysia and Nigeria. Some operators are still hesitant to provide specific information on the origin of deliveries
