In the trial surrounding the death of an 86-year-old from Völkermarkt, who died of malaria, the verdict was handed down today in the civil trial. The next of kin will receive 20,000 euros.
After the sudden death of a Völkermarkt woman three years ago, there were a few unanswered questions, including: Why and what did the woman die of? It soon became apparent that the 86-year-old had acquired a malaria-infected blood supply.
Survivor’s benefit for family members
In October 2020, the blood donor was subsequently convicted of wrongful death and had to pay a fine. The civil trial also began in the same month. At that time, the survivors demanded 33,800 euros in damages from the donor, the Red Cross and an employee.
A verdict was finally handed down in the civil trial on Wednesday. The next of kin will receive 10,000 euros in mourning and funeral costs, which will be paid by a blood donor, an ambulance driver and the Red Cross. The donor and rescue driver, who did not provide the information at the time, must pay the compensation for pain and suffering.
