Documents submitted – Trump wants to become president of the US again in 2024

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump wants to run again for the Republicans in the 2024 presidential election. Trump announced this on Tuesday evening (local time) during a performance at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. “America’s comeback begins now,” the 76-year-old said to guests in a room. Trump lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden. To this day, Trump has not admitted his electoral defeat.

The Republican praised the performance during his 2017-2021 term and lamented that the country has gone steeply downhill since Biden took office. “Soon we will be a great nation again,” Trump said. It was already known before his performance that Trump had submitted his application documents for a presidential candidacy in 2024. Trump described Biden’s America as a “failing nation”. On the other hand, he himself had twice built “the greatest economy of all time” – before and after the corona pandemic. “America’s comeback begins now,” he proclaimed.

Biden and “crazy radical left” bankrupted America — and he believes American voters would reject “the platform of the left,” Trump said.

Trump must first assert himself in internal party primaries
His announcement comes just a week after the US general and gubernatorial elections, in which the Republicans, contrary to expectations, failed to win a spectacular victory. Trump, who loudly interfered in the election campaign and publicly supported numerous right-wing candidates, is blamed for the poor result. That could now complicate his project: because in order to actually run as his party’s official candidate for the 2024 presidential election, Trump must assert himself in internal primaries of the party.

Trump’s ex-Vice President is also considering running
For example, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could become a threat to Trump. The 44-year-old was confirmed in office with a strong result in the midterm elections. While DeSantis represents similar hard-line positions as the ex-president, he seems less stark in his public image. And other Republicans should now feel emboldened to step out of cover. Trump Vice President Mike Pence distanced himself from him, saying he was considering running and would be willing to run against his former boss. From the more moderate corner of the party, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin was able to run for office.

Biden “didn’t really” want to comment on Trump’s plans
US President Biden initially did not want to say anything about the renewed candidacy of his predecessor Trump. “Not really,” Biden said in Indonesia on Wednesday, according to the American press traveling with him, when asked if he would comment on the announcement. Biden is attending the G20 summit of leading economic powers on the island of Bali. There he visited a mangrove forest with other heads of state and government. Biden stood by French President Emmanuel Macron when asked about Trump’s candidacy. The two reportedly grinned at each other.

Trump served as President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. In the United States, a person can serve two terms, consecutive or not. Trump would be 78 years old if elected in just over two years.
