Why was the case of a Viennese sports teacher who allegedly abused several boys at a high school never brought to justice? Why was there no further investigation, despite a complaint filed against the educator in 2013. All these questions now need to be clarified. A complaint has been filed with the public prosecutor’s office.
The teacher was reported by a former participant in a summer holiday camp at Lake Wolfgang, where the Viennese teacher worked with interruptions during the summer months between 1990 and 2010 as an extracurricular holiday supervisor. The teacher, who was already an adult at the time, described it during a massage at a police station in Lower Austria.
Although the teacher was subsequently questioned as a suspect, this case never came to trial. According to Lower Austria’s state police headquarters, the report was forwarded to another state – Salzburg or Upper Austria – due to the alleged crime scene at Wolfgangsee – and “silted up” due to circumstances not explained in detail.
No investigations
In May 2019, the sports teacher committed suicide – due to the teacher’s suicide, the file was no longer accessible for data protection reasons, a police spokesman stated at the end of September. The public prosecutor’s office in question has found no evidence of an investigation that would have been initiated against the teacher and holiday camp counselor on the basis of the 2013 report, nor has a nationwide search of the surname of the deceased teacher been carried out.
The Viennese lawyer Herta Bauer, who now assists several victims – including the first reporter – of the sports teacher, does not want to accept that, the ‘Standard’ reports online on Wednesday. Especially since sexual abuse of minors is an official crime, which should lead to investigative measures as soon as it becomes known to a law enforcement agency. Bauer assumes that the authorities have failed “worthy of a criminal prosecution”. An abuse of office has been reported.
