Excitement over an expensive Bösendorfer wing in Parliament. Wolfgang Sobotka, chairman of the National Council, defends himself against fire from the opposition.
A gilded concert grand piano evokes more emotions than a sonata. Bösendorfer’s good piece can be found in the newly designed Parliament, which has been renovated for over 400 million – rented for 3000 euros a month.
The opposition is angry about the takeover of Wolfgang Sobotka, chairman of the National Council of the ÖVP. The money could be much better spent. In view of the crisis, any form of glamor and pomp is an unnecessary provocation.
The wing is worth 190,000 euros. According to parliament, the lease can be terminated at any time. A budget of 1.8 million is generally available for works of art in the renovation. The idea for the wing came from the builder of the parliament, Theophil Hansen. Now it has been realized.
Wolfgang Sobotka’s spokesman (he likes to conduct in his spare time) says: “As the central place of democracy, parliament must also fulfill a legitimate representative claim.” Internationally, 1.5 to 2 percent of public construction projects are intended for art. In Austria it is only 0.5 percent.
