According to state media, unknown persons killed five people in southwestern Iran. Several people fired assault rifles at a group of police officers and civilians in the town of Izeh, Khuzestan province.
From Tuesday to Thursday, activists had called for new demonstrations and strikes to commemorate the violent crackdown on the 2019 protests. Hundreds of people were killed in protests known as “Bloody November”.
For now, it remained uncertain whether there was a connection between the incident and the systemic protests that have been going on for about two months.
The latest wave of protests against the Islamic Republic’s authoritarian policies was triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes.
