Arriving with a child – G20: Meloni was the only woman on top

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was the only woman among the heads of state and government in Bali. In addition, the right-wing politician traveled with her six-year-old daughter to the G20 summit, which is new in Italian history.

Despite her commitments, the 45-year-old politician had long promised not to be separated from her daughter. So she took six-year-old Ginevra with her. While the Prime Minister was talking to US President Joe Biden and other world leaders, her child spent time with a babysitter in the hotel pool. The girl had previously attended her mother’s other public events. Among them is the swearing in as head of government on October 22 in Rome.

“With her decision to bring her daughter to the G20, Meloni has shown that it is possible to remain a mother as prime minister. Unfortunately, we still live in a society that tends to clearly separate family and parental life from professional life and punish those who are forced to reconcile these two aspects. This all needs to change,” said Chiara Caucino, family officer for the northern Italian region of Piemonte.

Women MPs are allowed to bring babies to meetings
As for babies and toddlers, Italian parliamentarians will in future be allowed to take them to the Chamber in Rome and breastfeed them there. That was decided by a parliamentary committee on Tuesday. There is a separate small area in the back row for mothers to breastfeed. To this end, a regulation has been changed according to which only Members of Parliament may be in the room.
