Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will visit Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) on Tuesday.
Austria and Slovakia are closely connected as neighboring countries – both cultural, historically and economically. Almost 40,000 people commute from Slovakia to Austria. After the Netherlands, Austria is one of the largest investors in Slovakia with around seven billion euros.
Most recently in Austria in 2017
Prime Minister Fico himself was the last in Austria in August 2017. He met at a top of Austerlitz format with his counterparts from Austria and the Czech Republic in Salzburg. The French President Emmanuel Macron was there too.
Talk about the Western Balkans and upcoming EU peaks
In terms of content, according to the federal chancellery, the working visit will deal with bilateral questions and international issues. Both countries are involved as part of the group of so-called Friends of the Western Balkans for an early EU expansion around the Western Balkans.
Moreover, it is expected that the upcoming EU summit will be on the agenda for Fico and Stocker and will therefore be the same as the situation in the middle, the escalation between Iran and Israel and the Russian attack war in Ukraine, migration and competitive capacity.
Fico in Russia
Fico recently caused a sensation because he was the only EU head of the government that participated in the victory parade in Moscow on 9 May. Given the NATO target for the defense expenditure of five percent of GDP, Fico spoke about a “neutrality” of his country.
