Global sigh of relief: The grain export agreement between Ukraine and Russia was extended for 120 days two days before it actually expires, according to Ukrainian information. A representative of the Turkish government also confirmed the success of the negotiations.
“The agreement will continue under the same conditions as before,” the government representative in Ankara told AFP news agency. New arrangements are likely to come after the “winter season,” the company said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had already expressed his confidence on the sidelines of the G20 summit that the deal would hold. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also welcomed the positive outcome of the latest negotiations. He added that the United Nations would work hard to remove obstacles to Russian food and fertilizer exports as well. The government in Moscow had insisted on this point.
The agreement between Turkey and the UN aims to allow Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports despite the war. According to the United Nations, some eleven million tons of grain have been delivered to 42 countries since July.
