The conversion of a house in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district of Vienna apparently had serious consequences. A 17-year-old was found unconscious in the bathtub by her sister on Wednesday evening – the teen had suffered life-threatening carbon monoxide poisoning.
The teen was found at 9:20 p.m. The sister reacted quickly and immediately alerted the professional rescue service. The girl was removed from the immediate danger zone and examined, which revealed life-threatening poisoning.
closure and evacuation
The police placed a barrier around the apartment building in question and the building itself was immediately evacuated. All residents were then brought outside and investigated, police said. No other cases of poisoning were found.
The 17-year-old was taken to hospital after stabilization under artificial respiration. According to rescuers, the girl was in imminent danger.
That’s how the drama started
But how could this tragedy happen? Apparently construction work had led to this, as a chimney sweep of the Viennese fire brigade had to determine. Among other things, the attic of the apartment building is currently being expanded. “Apparently masonry work has recently taken place on a chimney,” said police spokeswoman Irina Steirer on Thursday. “During this work, a Styrofoam plate was fixed in or on the chimney” – the consequences: devastating. The plate prevented the exhaust gas from the gas boiler from escaping.
An investigation is now underway against unknown persons.
