The German federal prosecutor’s office has arrested an employee of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) on suspicion of espionage for Russia. Carsten L. was charged with treason, the federal prosecutor general in Karlsruhe announced on Thursday. The German is said to have passed on state secret information to a Russian intelligence service this year.
L. was arrested in Berlin on Wednesday by agents of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department. In addition, the apartment and workplace of the suspect and another person were searched. The suspect is in custody.
BND personnel charged with treason
BND President Bruno Kahl said that as part of its intelligence work, the foreign secret service had learned of a possible case of treason in its own ranks. Extensive internal investigations have been launched as a result. “When they confirmed the suspicion, the Attorney General was immediately called in.”
The BND kept a low profile on the details. “Restraint and discretion are very important in this particular case,” Kahl said. “With Russia, we are dealing with an actor on the other side whose unscrupulousness and readiness for violence we must reckon with. Every detail of this process that becomes public represents an advantage to this adversary in its intent to harm Germany.”
