Ukraine will receive further relief supplies such as food, medicines and power generators from the European Union. This month, the European Commission is coordinating more than 1,800 tons of emergency aid, the Brussels authority announced on Thursday. Meanwhile, Finland, which borders Russia, is sending more defense supplies to Ukraine, according to the defense ministry in Helsinki.
“The main priority of our humanitarian action today is to increase winter aid,” said EU Commissioner Janez Lenarcic. Emergency shelters, first aid kits, protective clothing, firefighting equipment, craft and buses would also be provided. It is the largest, most complex and longest operation in the history of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Lenarcic said. The Commission uses the procedure to coordinate aid sent from EU countries to other countries inside and outside the Union.
All EU countries took part in the aid campaign
In total, since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February, the EU has sent 74,000 tonnes of goods worth €450 million to Ukraine under the crisis mechanism. In addition, according to the Commission, there is EUR 523 million in humanitarian financial aid. All EU countries have therefore contributed.
Defense package from Finland worth €55 million
Finnish President Sauli Niinistö has decided to send more defense equipment to Ukraine at the suggestion of the government. According to the Ministry of Defense in Helsinki, the tenth aid package from the Nordic EU country is worth 55.6 million euros, raising the value of all deliveries of Finnish defense equipment to Ukraine to 160.4 million euros. It is the largest package to date, Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen said on Thursday.
For operational and security reasons, the ministry did not specify what the package would contain and when it would be delivered. Finland has a 1,340 km border with Russia and decided to apply for NATO membership after Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year.
