Ancient war relics were again declared war by the army. Last week alone, more than 12,000 kilograms of old munitions were detonated at the Allentsteig military training area in the Zwettl district of Lower Austria.
Large quantities of ammunition from the First and especially the Second World War are still on Austrian territory – including at the military training area in Alltensteig. Just last week, 12,300 kilos of old explosives were defused. The goal was to finally defuse the war relics.
Since the mine clearance service became part of the army, it has had to deploy 10,958 times. At the end of last year, 4814 – and therefore clearly the most – were deployed in Lower Austria. This year alone, the demining service has called 915 nationwide. In October, the army’s demolition experts were deployed 50 times across the country.
Experts at work every day
The demolition work usually proceeds as follows: the war crimes are rendered harmless on site, removed and then rendered harmless. Cities, alpine terrain and bodies of water are among the locations – difficult situations for the employees of the mine clearance service. They travel around Austria about three to four times a day. The army’s mine clearance service specializes in all types of munitions from before 1955.
