On Friday morning, power went out in several districts (a total of 10,000 households) in Vienna – also to the chagrin of many households that may have been dependent on their morning coffee from the coffee machine at this time. Many traffic lights also went out.
After 20 minutes, however, all-clear could be called again. According to Wiener Netze, the extensive power outage lasted from 8:09 a.m. to 8:29 a.m. The Vienna districts of Margareten and Meidling were hit. Mariahilf and Rudolfsheim-Funfhaus. Parts of Hietzing and the new building would have been without electricity during this time.
The affected area consisted of parts of Grünbergstrasse in the 12th and 13th district, Sechshauser Strasse in the 15th, a small stretch of Mariahilfer Strasse in the 7th, Webgasse in the 6th and Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse in the 5th district and then back via Margaretengurtel as as well as Eichenstrasse and Edelsinnstrasse.
Technical problem
The reason was therefore revision work in a substation, which resulted in a “protection trip”. According to Call, the protective shutdown in the substation works like when a fuse blows in the fuse box at home. This is a precaution “so that no one and nothing is harmed”.
In recent weeks there have been more frequent power outages in Vienna and the surrounding area – most recently in the inner city on the Ringstrasse. About 500 connections were affected.
