The digital driving license is Austria’s first digital identity card. According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and State Secretary for Digitization Florian Tursky (both ÖVP), it was downloaded 115,249 times in the first month, 73,404 times on iOS and 51,869 times on the Android version. However, it is not particularly well reviewed.
In the Google Play Store, the first users rated the ‘eID’ app on average with two out of five possible stars. Common criticisms are complicated activation and error messages. The graphic design of the app has also been criticized.
Apple Disciples are a little more forgiving, giving it an average of 2.5 out of five stars, but there are also plenty of one-star ratings on the App Store. A lack of integration in Apple’s digital wallet Apple Wallet has been criticized, and not everyone likes the application’s playful design.
The Ministry of Finance, which publishes the application, emphasizes in response to the reviews that it is continuously developing the app and wants to respond to criticism.
Valid wherever the credit card driver’s license is valid
In principle, the digital driver’s license can be used anywhere, just like the credit card driver’s license, provided that it can be checked digitally. Since Austria is a pioneer here, the digital driving license is currently only recognized in Austria. However, it is based on the EU’s eIDAS regulation and should therefore be recognized across the Union in the future.
Talks are currently being held with the Chamber of Commerce and ticket providers so that the first digital proof of identity can also be used as proof of age, for example in the discotheque. Subsequently, work will be done on the digital registration certificate and the integration of the climate ticket and the eCard, which must follow the eID platform.
