Essen police reported bullet holes in the Rabbinerhaus next to the Old Synagogue in Essen on Friday morning. An explosives detection dog was deployed and a commission of inquiry was set up.
Witnesses reported the bullet holes. It is still unclear when the shooting took place and how many shots were fired.
“We currently have a police operation at the Old Synagogue,” Essen police said on Twitter. “Witnesses reported bullet holes in the rabbi’s house. No one was injured. There is no danger to the population,” the ministry said.
The Rabbinerhaus is located on Steeler Strasse, right next to the old synagogue. According to a police spokeswoman, shots were fired at a window. The square in front of the building was closed off.
The 70-meter-long building is one of the largest and best-preserved architectural testimonies of pre-war Jewish culture in Germany.
The rabbi’s house next to the synagogue was also built at the same time according to plans by the architect Edmund Körner. It has been listed as a monument since 1985.
