A 100-year-old Italian woman living alone in a house in rural southern Sardinia has been fined for not having had her three coronavirus vaccinations. Severina Utzeri has to pay a fine of 100 euros because vaccination is mandatory for Italians over 50. Because the woman lives in complete isolation and cannot infect anyone, her son appealed against the sentence, local daily L’Unione Sarda reported.
“My mother has always followed all the rules in her life. We are talking about a centenarian who has not left the house since 2018. We thought it best not to vaccinate her precisely because, regardless of her age, she lives in nature and does not come into contact with anyone except us children and the caretaker,” emphasizes Severina Utzeri’s son.
Haven’t left the house since 2018
The complaint has since been forwarded to the health service in the Sardinian capital Cagliari. In it, the woman reported that she was not aware of the current regulations against the pandemic and that she had not left her home since 2018. She was not sick with the corona virus and she had not infected anyone.
Numerous vaccine refusals did not pay fines
The Italian parliament is deciding on the possible abolition of a corona vaccination obligation for Italians over 50, which has been in force since January. The measure was taken by the government to speed up the vaccination campaign. Italians over 50 who have not yet had three corona vaccinations must pay a fine of 100 euros. However, many people who refuse to vaccinate have not paid the fine.
“The only two countries that have imposed fines on non-vaccinated people and then repealed them are Austria and Greece. So far we have had mandatory vaccination, let’s see if Parliament will take action in this direction,” said Health Minister Orazio Schillaci.
