Actually, recruits from a police academy in the US state of California wanted to complete their morning sports component as part of their basic training. But the training ended in a bloodbath. A speeding SUV collided with the group on Wednesday, hitting 25 police students. Five of them were taken to hospital with serious injuries. “It looked like a plane wreck. There were injuries everywhere,” sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference.
The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the town of Whittier. The running group noticed that a vehicle was approaching them at high speed. The car was also driving on the wrong side of the road. The police students tried to save themselves on the side, but not all were in time and were dragged along. Only a street lamp post stopped the odyssey of the 22-year-old driver, who was apprehended a short time later.
A breathalyzer test was negative. However, police found traces of marijuana in his car. It is not yet known whether the 22-year-old was under the influence of drugs. According to the Los Angeles Times, the driver told police he was drowsy.
Driver cooperative with police
According to other media reports, the driver cooperated with the detectives. As they go about their business, the doctors tend to the critically injured, some of whom, according to Sheriff Villanueva, “will not suffer from long-term consequences for the rest of their lives.”
