Corona, climate crisis and war – in times like these you could easily lose confidence. The “hope barometer” uses an online survey to determine how hopeful we Austrians are.
Since 2009, the “Hope Barometer” has been held annually in Switzerland. “The results have always been quite stable so far, but since the pandemic the need for security, such as a permanent job, has become more important,” explains initiator Prof. Andreas Krafft from the University of St. Gallen. Now the “Hope Barometer” is also coming to Austria and wants to determine how much confidence we still have despite inflation and crises.
In addition to asking about the hope factors, this survey also specifically asks about the attitude of the population towards the theme of war and peace.
Against the negative expectations of the future
What is this survey for? On the one hand, an atmosphere is created, on the other hand, it is possible to respond specifically to the needs of the people. For example, based on the survey, so-called hope workshops for young people have been started: “We find that young people in particular have negative expectations of the future.”
These workshops, which have already been successfully carried out in schools in Vorarlberg, now serve to give our children and young people more self-confidence. “These forward-looking projects are intended to show young people that they should not give up. Because they can actively help shape and make a difference.”
The research is carried out in collaboration with renowned universities in Australia, Colombia, the Czech Republic, France, India, Israel, Italy, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Spain and South Africa in addition to Switzerland and now Austria.
