After user voting, Twitter unblocked ex-President Trump’s account

Date:

Twitter has reinstated ex-US President Donald Trump’s account, which has been suspended since early 2021. The Republican’s profile was back on the platform on Saturday evening (local time) — with the latest tweet dated January 8, 2021 at the top. A few minutes earlier, new Twitter owner Elon Musk had announced the activation following a user survey.

With a narrow majority of 51.8 percent of the votes cast, users of the short message service voted to allow the former US president back on the platform. “The people have spoken, Trump may be reinstated,” Musk tweeted. He called on users to vote on Friday.

Donald Trump’s account was permanently suspended by the former owners of Twitter after supporters of the former US president stormed the US Capitol in the last days of his presidency in early 2021. Trump would have preferred to explain his policy via Twitter. So far, however, the ex-president has shown little interest in returning to the short message service.
